Victoria’s Battery Shift: A New Chapter in Home Energy Storage

The Victorian Government has officially wrapped up its direct incentives for home batteries — and in their place, a powerful new national program is stepping in.

From 1 July 2025, eligible home battery systems will attract a federal rebate worth up to 30% off the upfront cost, using an expanded Small-scale Technology Certificates (STC) framework. For households across Victoria, this means battery storage is about to get a whole lot more accessible — and a whole lot more strategic.

📉 What’s Changing?
  • Victoria’s interest-free battery loans (up to $8,800) are closing on 30 June 2025.

  • No new state-based battery rebates or loans will follow — the program achieved its target of 20,000+ batteries installed and is officially complete.

  • The new federal rebate begins the next day, 1 July 2025, using STCs to reduce the cost of eligible batteries by roughly $372 per usable kWh.

That means a typical 10 kWh battery could be $3,700 cheaper, applied directly at the point of sale by your installer.

⚙️ What Does This Mean for Victorian Homeowners?

In plain terms:

You’re not losing out — the rebate isn’t gone, it’s just been handed over to Canberra.

Unlike past rebates, this one isn’t income-tested or capped by postcode. And there’s no separate government application portal — your installer applies the rebate directly.

It’s a simpler system, and it signals a broader push:

Battery storage is no longer a niche upgrade. It’s becoming a mainstream piece of Australia’s clean energy future.

⚠️ A Few Things to Watch

Timing matters: Only battery systems installed and signed off after 1 July 2025 qualify for the new federal rebate.

Approved products only: Batteries must meet CEC standards and be installed by a certified professional.

VPP-capable systems: Your battery must be able to join a Virtual Power Plant — though you’re not required to sign up for one.

💬 Our Take? Cautiously Optimistic.

We’ve always supported action that helps Australians take control of their energy.

This new national battery program is a welcome move — not perfect, but practical. It simplifies the process, reduces the price tag, and gives households a real opportunity to take the next step in their energy journey.

Victoria’s state program helped kickstart battery adoption. Now it’s time to scale up — and do it right.
