China is lightyears ahead: Manufacturing and International Industry events at scale

In April, I found myself standing in a conference hall in China surrounded by thousands of energy professionals, developers, manufacturers, utilities, investors and technology leaders from around the world.




The occasion was Sungrow's Global Renewable Energy Summit (GRES), an event bringing together some of the brightest minds and largest organisations operating in the global energy transition.



For someone who spends most days moving between Australian and New Zealand based projects, supporting developments across Asia Pacific, and helping to build a clear emissions reduction and business profitability frameworks for tourism and accommodation businesses as well as education providers, it felt a long way from home.


But in many ways, it reinforced something I have been observing for years.


The future isn't arriving. It's already here. We just haven't seen all of it yet. 




A Different Scale


One of the first things that struck me was the sheer scale. The conference itself was impressive, but what really stood out was the pace at which the industry is moving.


For many people, solar and batteries are still considered emerging technologies. In China, with the entire world in one place, the conversation has already shifted. The discussions were no longer focused on whether renewable energy works. They were focused on how to optimise it.


How to integrate it.

How to make it smarter.

How to deploy it faster.


And most importantly, how to extract greater value from every kilowatt-hour generated, stored and consumed.


The future discussions were centred around artificial intelligence, advanced energy management systems, grid-forming inverters, virtual power plants, demand response, large-scale storage and intelligent control systems.


These are technologies that are rapidly moving from innovation to implementation.



The Rise of Energy Intelligence


One theme appeared repeatedly throughout the summit. The future of energy is not simply renewable generation. It is intelligent energy management. For years, the focus has been on installing more solar. Today, attention is shifting toward understanding when energy should be generated, when it should be stored, when it should be consumed and when it should be traded.



The value of energy is becoming increasingly dynamic. A kilowatt-hour generated at the right time may be worth significantly more than one generated at the wrong time. Battery storage, forecasting systems, AI-driven controls and sophisticated software platforms are becoming just as important as the physical hardware itself. This is a trend we are already seeing emerge across Australia. The conversations in China simply confirmed how quickly that transition is accelerating.


AI could completely change energy


One presentation highlighted something that caught my attention. Global electricity demand is expected to rise significantly over coming years, driven by two major forces: Electrification of transport and Artificial intelligence and data centres



Most people understand electric vehicles will require more energy. Far fewer appreciate the scale of electricity consumption required to support AI. Data centres are becoming major energy consumers, and demand projections presented at the summit were substantial.


This creates both challenges and opportunities. The challenge is obvious. More electricity will be required. The opportunity is that renewable generation and energy storage technologies are rapidly becoming capable of meeting much of that demand.



Why This Matters for Australia


Australia is uniquely positioned. We have world-class renewable resources. We have strong technical capability. We have an electricity market increasingly suited to flexible energy assets. Yet many organisations are still thinking about solar and batteries as isolated technologies. The global market is moving toward integrated energy ecosystems.

Solar. Storage. Load management. Demand response. Energy trading. Virtual power plants. AI optimisation and energy arbitrage, distribution of consumer energy assets


The organisations that understand how these pieces work together will be best positioned to benefit from the transition.



A visit beyond the conference - Mega Factory


One of the highlights of the trip was visiting manufacturing and technology facilities supporting the renewable energy sector. The level of automation, monitoring and quality control was remarkable. Large digital control rooms provided real-time visibility across manufacturing operations, supply chains and product performance. Walking through these facilities provided a useful reminder that the energy transition is no longer a future concept.

It is being built right now. At scale. Every day.



Looking Forwards


I left China with a sense that we are entering a new phase of the energy transition. The first phase was about proving renewable energy works. The second phase was about deploying it at scale. The next phase will be about intelligence. How generation, storage, consumption and markets interact in real time. How software creates value from hardware. How organisations make better decisions using data. And how we build energy systems that are not only cleaner, but smarter.



For those of us working in the sector, it is an exciting time to be involved.

The pace of change is extraordinary. The opportunities are significant.


And if the conversations at GRES are any indication, the next decade will look very different from the last.
